HIPAA Overview
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 is a comprehensive law that drives the development of electronic data interchange (EDI) for specified administrative and financial healthcare transactions.

The intent of the law is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the healthcare system by encouraging the development of health information systems that utilize EDI for the administrative and financial transactions specified. PENALTIES
The cost of implementing HIPAA is relatively small compared to the noncompliance penalties proposed by the government. Civil monetary penalties could reach up to $25,000 per year for each requirement that is violated. Criminal penalties can be up to $250,000 and/or 10 years in jail.
